“A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove… but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.”

If you have visited my office in the past 23 years you will know that this picture hangs proudly on my wall. It helps me to keep perspective. I realized that working as a Pastor to Jr. High, High School and College Students wasn’t going to be the most lucrative career path. I just didn’t care about money and material stuff because I knew then and I know now that I am a full time Therapist that I was meant (some might say called) to be a “Helper”. As time progressed in my career I began to see the pure joy that comes when I see an individual, couple or family make a huge turn around and become a new and best version of themselves.
Today I have a session with a 9 year old and a 13 year old. One struggling with self-esteem and learning how to share emotions. The other trying to find himself and choosing destructive and deceitful activities.
I sit with these parents as they have lost hope on how to help their child… So they come seeking help! I’m so happy to help but I always encourage the parents to find a place or group for their child where they can be mentored and learn positive life choices. Maybe a Youth or Children’s group at your Church. or get them involved in sports, theater, chorus, band, after school clubs, etc. There are many teen groups at your local YMCA. How about girl scouts or boy scouts? Did you know that Big Brothers/Big Sisters still exist? I actually have another client who is now 20 years old and was brought in to live with her “Big Sister” and her family. She has made so many positive changes in her life thanks to an individual who said “I’m going to help.”
So what about you? How are you helping? How are you making a difference in the life of our next generation? How are you helping to mold the minds and hearts of our children and youth? Do you sit back and shake your head at their negative behavior OR do you stand up and say I’m going to help? Are you investing in material things or are you investing in our future leaders?
There is so many ways you can help. It really only takes an hour or 2 a week. I challenge you to find out ways you can become important in the life of a child!
